Fetty Fleurs

September 29, 2007

Jeff Fetty’s at it again — here’s his latest installation, located in his hometown of Spencer, West Virginia. It’s an arrangement of his trademark wrought-iron flowers, and they are stunning! I didn’t get a good picture of the entire grouping because it’s in a busy intersection, and there was no way to get a pretty picture without a Go-mart or something in the background, so I’m just going to leave you with a teaser. If you want to see it, make a trek to Spencer, sometime, or check out his other installation at the Trace Fork shopping center on Corridor G — it’s very similar.
I’ve been fortunate enough to meet Fetty a couple times. He’s a really cool guy, and I’m really excited about some plans he has to turn Spencer into an arts mecca. You know I’m all over that!

Erosion

September 29, 2007

Everyday I drive past this spot at the top of a ridge where the hillside is cut away and the red, iron-rich soil has eroded down the hillside in waves. It looks like something straight out of a painting of the Southwest. The soil looks much more orangey-red than anything else around here.

Elk Fork Lake

September 24, 2007

Elk Fork Lake is a weird place. It’s a man-made lake, and relatively new, I think. It’s strange because the area was flooded, leaving all these trees poking up out of the water. It’s eerie, sort of reminiscent of the cypress knobs sticking up out of the swamps in Louisiana.

Apparently, the trees make for some killer fishing, though. The fishermen were out en force Sunday, despite the heat, and they were catching fish left and right.
