David Boreanaz

August 31, 2006

David Boreanaz
9″ X 11″, collage

Okay, I admit it. I’m a fangirl. I have watched all seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer religiously, and I own the boxed set. THE boxed set. ALL the episodes. And the soundtracks. And a T-shirt. And I would gladly carry around a wooden stake and fight evil if my city happened to be situated atop the Hellmouth, and some nasty-faced vampire overlord decided to unleash evil on mankind, starting with Charleston, WV.

Actually, I was convinced, for a while, that my previous place of employment was, in fact, built over the gates of hell, with little bits of evil leaking out and making all my coworkers crazy, but that’s a whole different post, entirely.

The point is, I’m a fangirl, and I make no apologies. David Boreanaz = hotness. The end.

Corridor

August 29, 2006

This is the corridor outside my room. There used to be a lovely courtyard here, but they turned it into a big dining hall, leaving only a sliver of space for the windows.

At least they kept the windows, right? It’s so strange, though — there is so little natural light down here that at the end of the day, when I leave the building and go upstairs, I’m always surprised to find that it’s actually sunny out.

I can’t complain, though — my classroom used to be the kitchen. Old kitchens make excellent art rooms, because they have huge, industrial sinks and shelves and lots of cabinets!

So, here it is, the second week of school. Tonight, I’m stuck here until late, late, late for Open House. I actually love Open House, though, because it gives me a chance to show off my program to parents. I usually have to defend it to one or two parents who think it’s just a “fluff” class, or a “grade booster,” but when I’m through with them, they usually get that this is definitely an academic class, and that there is a lot more to art than birdhouses and ashtrays.

I’ve done a few fun art pieces for myself this week, too. I’m not sure if I’m going to try to jury into Allied Artists this fall or wait ’til Spring, though. It’s been a lot busier summer than I expected it to be, and I would feel more confident if I had a more consistent portfolio. *sigh* I might just have to wait until Spring.

Hi-ho, hi-ho…

August 25, 2006

… it’s back to school we go!

I must be a true geek, because I actually love going back to school each year. I love getting my classroom straightened up, hanging up posters, opening up boxes of new art supplies and putting them up on clean shelves.

I also love driving down Leon Sullivan Way to see all the kids in their fresh white polos and blue corduroy pants waiting by the front door for Mrs. Sullivan (principal) to let them in. I love seeing how much they’ve grown, and the new hairstyles they’re trying out (because you have to have a totally new hairstyle for the first day of school!)

We’re a week into school, now, and it’s so nice to be back. I love my job, and I’m extremely lucky to be doing what I love. How many people can say they really love their jobs?

I have to give Charlie Tee props for reminding me that dreams are something you have to make happen, and dreams require upkeep. You can’t just go through life waiting for your dreams to jump up out of nowhere — you have to make them happen. I am living my dreams right now, but I can’t get complacent. I need to make more art, plain and simple.

New Local Movie Being Made

August 18, 2006

There’s a new movie being made in Spencer, WV. Pretty Girls Make Graves is a horror-flick spoof, in the same vein as Invasion of the Space Preachers. I won’t go into details — you can go to the website to read the storyline — but I did manage to land a cameo appearance as an innocent bystander. (I’m gonna be FAMOUS! Teehee!)

The film debuts at the historic Robey Theater in Spencer on October 31st. Please support local art, and plan to come and see the movie. You’ll laugh… you probably won’t cry… you’ll have a great time and laugh some more when you remember the zombie’s response to “Hey buddy! Are you OK?”

Hehheh! Seriously. It’s that funny!

Weston State Hospital — Part II

August 11, 2006

Here’s another door from the Weston State Hospital. Looks like someone wanted to get in… or out… really bad.

A friend just sent me an article about some police officers who played paintball inside the asylum and really messed the place up something fierce. Lovely. That was from 1999, and there was talk then about turning the asylum into a Civil War museum. I hope that’s why they’re fixing it up right now. Wouldn’t that be awesome? I hope they keep with the same interior architecture, for the most part, though. Apparently, there is a really beautiful mural inside that is being restored. I would love to see it.

Weston State Hospital

August 11, 2006

I’m back from vacation and mural-painting… whee! Now it’s almost time for school to start. But, not wanting to give up vacation so quickly, I decided to make a little jaunt on over to Weston to see the old State Hospital. I’ve been wanting to see this building ever since I moved to Spencer and learned that there was an almost identical building to Weston’s Asylum right here in Spencer. (It was torn down and made into a Wal Mart. Same clientele — less interesting architecture.)

I’ll be posting a few photos from that visit in the next few days. This is my favorite. It’s interesting to watch nature reclaiming this ginormous building. It’s also interesting that the plant with the red flowers growing over the steps is called “Devil’s Trumpet.” Superstition says it only grows where the devil has been. Oooh, spooky!
